Student Highlight of the Month
Our student highlight of the month is...
Tartans and Panthers for Israel. This
Wednesday the Israel advocacy groups brought
in Khald Abu Toameh, the Israeli Arab West
Bank and Gaza correspondent for the Jerusalem
Post and U.S. News and World Report. He
previously served as a senior writer for the
Jerusalem Report, and a correspondent for
Al-Fajr. 75 students came to hear Mr. Toameh
at CMU and 85 joined us later that night at
Pitt.

| Student Program Review |

How does the environment fit into Judaism?
Just ask the Hillel JUC environmental
committee who held an environmental awareness
Tu B'Shvat Shabbat in an effort to
educate about the value of nature in Judaism.
They are also working to LEED certify the
Hillel JUC and help make the city green.
More on the global awareness front- Pitt
students caused a major splash on campus with
speaker Simon Deng who discussed the
historical
overview of Sudan and
oppression of citizens that led up to the
current issue in Darfur. Deng inspired 120
students to understand the importance of student
action on behalf of Darfur, and expressed
frustration with the inaction of the UN.
Also in the Pitt Union, the "Campus
Superstar" semifinals attracted over 300
students, parents, and community members to
determine the 10 finalists for the March 29th
event.

| Student Program Preview |

Hebrew is coming to the forefront this
semester with "Hebreworld," a new Hebrew
conversation club, and even provides extra
credit through the Pitt Jewish studies dept.
Not up to conversations but want to know
what the prayer book actually says? Kesher,
the Reform student group, is teaching prayer
book Hebrew every Friday before services.
Hebrew not your schtick? We're celebrating
Purim in style with Dan Ahdoot, Iranian
Jewish comedian and finalist on "Last Comic
Standing," will make you and hundreds of
students laugh for sure! Following the show
students will continue the celebration with
an 80's
costume party.
Later this month the 2nd annual "iFest," a
celebration of Israeli culture, democracy, and
pluralism, will bring falafel, Israeli style
house music,
henna tattoos, and krav maga martial arts to
campus.
As April approaches, the CMU student board is
working to bring the annual holocaust
remembrance week to a whole new level, with
speakers, an art show, and a bottle cap
collection to represent lost lives.
Meanwhile, students continue their fundraising
effortsto further support
programming and Shabbat dinners at the Hillel
JUC.
Through these efforts, students will receive
raffle
tickets for every $500 they raise. One
lucky winner will be chosen at
Campus Superstar for a FREE TRIP to ISRAEL!
Help a
student reach their goal by emailing Laura.
